Background of the Study
Digital campaigns have become a cornerstone of modern electoral strategies, offering political candidates the ability to reach broader audiences through social media platforms, websites, and other online tools. In Nigeria, the increasing use of digital media in political campaigns has transformed how candidates interact with voters, especially for women, who often face more challenges in traditional campaigning due to societal barriers and gender biases. In Kano Municipal Local Government Area, Kano State, the participation of women in political campaigns has traditionally been limited by cultural norms and gender stereotypes, which restrict women’s access to political spaces. However, with the rise of digital platforms, female political candidates are finding new avenues to engage with the electorate, raise awareness about their candidacies, and promote their political agendas. Digital tools such as Twitter, Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram have allowed women to challenge traditional gender roles by bypassing conventional gatekeepers and directly interacting with voters (Abdullahi & Musa, 2023). Despite these opportunities, the impact of digital campaigns on the success of female political candidates in Kano Municipal LGA is yet to be thoroughly assessed. This study aims to appraise how digital campaigns have shaped the political landscape for women in this region, examining the effectiveness, challenges, and potential of digital media in enhancing the political participation of female candidates.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The limited participation of women in political processes in Kano Municipal LGA is rooted in traditional gender norms that restrict women’s political roles. While digital media offers a platform for women to bypass some of these barriers, it is unclear how effective digital campaigns are in securing electoral success for female candidates in the region. Some studies have pointed to the potential of social media to increase women’s visibility and enable them to advocate for their political rights, but it is still unknown whether digital campaigning significantly enhances women’s chances of success in highly competitive political environments like Kano Municipal LGA (Zubairu, 2024). This study seeks to investigate the impact of digital campaigns on the electoral success of female candidates, identifying the opportunities and challenges that digital platforms present for women’s political participation.

Additionally, the study will contribute to the academic literature on gender and technology in political campaigns, particularly in the context of Nigeria’s evolving political landscape (Aminu & Lawal, 2024). By exploring the unique challenges faced by female candidates in digital campaigning, this research can inform the development of strategies to improve women’s political participation and representation in Nigeria.
